It is, without a doubt, the world’s most unusual national park. Where else can you see lions, rhinos, buffalo, and giraffe just minutes from the country’s capital? Nairobi National Park is a marvel of animals in a grassland environment yet framed by the skyscrapers of busy Nairobi in the background, only 7 km (4 mi) from the center of city.
It’s Kenya’s first national park, and it’s so close that you can visit for a day or even a day and see more wildlife than most locations on the planet before returning to town for supper.
Nairobi’s wildlife
Four of Africa’s “Big Five,” as well as cheetah, leopard, gazelle, hyena, impala, zebra, and ostrich, may all be seen in the wild within view of airliners flying in on their final approach.
The park’s birdlife is abundant, especially in the marshes, where there are over 400 kinds of birds among the hippos’ pods.
The park also serves as a rhino sanctuary, with the largest number of black rhino in Kenya. In fact, the park has been dubbed “Kifaru Ark” — kifaru means rhinoceros in Kiswahili.
Locals frequently enjoy their adjacent park, which is also a popular destination for Nairobi kids on field excursions.
In this remarkable refuge so near to the city, you may easily enjoy the various hiking routes, picnic areas, and even campgrounds.
There are also several unique reserves within the park that you should not miss. Baby elephants and rhino calves are rescued and cared for at the David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage. Feeding time is always a fun and exciting occasion for both man and infant animals.
The yearly wildebeest and zebra migration may also be seen here, in this refuge mere minutes from a world capital — an amazing contrast of contemporary man and nature’s unchanging cycles.
Nairobi National Park is located in Kenya.
The park is just roughly 30,000 acres, or 117 square kilometers (45 square miles), making it one of Africa’s tiniest parks. However, given its closeness to a big metropolis, the abundance of animals here is remarkable.
It’s only 7 kilometers south of Nairobi, so it’s a simple trip away from the metropolis.
Except for the wet season, the park has a dry climate. The average daytime temperature is 22 degrees Celsius/72 degrees Fahrenheit.
When to go: The park is open all year and is always open. Vehicles are required to enter the park.
The ideal time to come is during the dry season (July to March), when you can see the most animals. On wet roads, the rainy season (April–June) provides certain challenges.
Getting there: By automobile, use Langata Road from Nairobi’s city center. Giga Destinations Tours & Safaris offers full-day and half-day excursions.
It is not only one of the most accessible parks, but it is also one of the most distinctive. Breakfast in the city, then an hour later, go on a safari with lions and rhinos! You’ll have beautiful recollections of your vacation here with cityscapes framing your animal shots.
