Mount Kenya National Park

It is Africa’s second tallest peak. Despite its proximity to the equator, it is home to 12 glaciers, as well as beautiful lakes, tarns, and deep alpine forest. Mt. Kenya National Park is a place and a planet apart from the rest of the country’s national parks.

Climbing and camping are both fantastic. When the mists lift, the views are breathtaking. You may start your trip in the tropical jungle, observing buffalo and elephants, at this UNESCO World Heritage Site.

About Mount Kenya

Then you’ll ascend to a bamboo grove, where you could see Colubus and other monkeys. Antelope and gigantic forest pigs can also be found in this densely forested area. Your journey continues into the alpine moorlands, where you’ll see unusual flora such as the towering enormous lobelia.

You’ll enter glacier country as you climb the mountain, a bleak moonscape of rock, ice, and snow.

Finally, you’ll reach the summit of this extinct volcano, which offers panoramic views of the Kenyan highlands.

The opportunity to ascend a tall summit soaring above the heat and savannahs of Africa and take in the deep wilderness view is, of course, the major lure of Mt. Kenya Park.

A Spectacular Park

There were various compelling reasons for the park’s creation in 1949. Mount Kenya, the surrounding species, and the ecosystem all needed the safeguards that a park designation would provide. Furthermore, the region serves as a key water catchment for numerous big river systems in Kenya.

The elegant mountain, which offers seven ways to the top, has long been a favorite of climbers. Only Point Lenana (4985m/16,354 ft) of Mt. Kenya’s three summits – Batian (5199m/17,057 ft), Nelion (5188m/17,021 ft), and Batian (5199m/17,057 ft) – can be climbed by frequent tourists.

The additional higher summits are only accessible to experienced technical mountaineers.

Climbing at high altitudes can be difficult, and it is suggested that climbers acclimate for at least three nights to avoid altitude sickness.

You’ll be greeted by the park’s abundant birds as you begin your trek at the mountain’s tropical base. In this majestic park, keep an eye out for sunbirds, eagles, and other avian life as you hike through the woodlands and moors.

The Mt. Kenya National Park

The park is 700 square kilometers in size (270 sq. mi). Its vertical boundary, which includes the mountain’s summits, begins at 3200m (11,000 ft) and extends up to 5199m (17,058 ft). The Mt. Kenya Reserve encompasses the land surrounding the park.

Location

Mt. Kenya is located 175 kilometers (108 miles) north of Nairobi, with its northern part bordering the equator.

Climate:

The climate varies as you approach Mt. Kenya since it is really a vertical park. With lows of 4oC/39oF, expect huge temperature swings between day and night. The mountain is prone to becoming wet due to its height.

When is the best time to visit:

The two dry seasons — January/February and August/September – are the greatest for climbing. The paths are more challenging and visibility is poor during the two wet seasons.

Getting there: Giga Destinations Safaris offers tours from Nairobi. The Nanyuki-Isiolo road leads to the park. The villages of Naro Moru, Nanyuki, Meru, and Embu are connected by an asphalt road that encircle the mountain’s base.

By air: Nanyuki or Laikipia Airport are the nearest airstrips to Mt. Kenya.
