The fish and coral here compete for your attention with their vivid colours, creating an explosion of oceanic beauty. Fringing reefs, coral gardens, lagoons, seagrass, and all kinds of sea life – turtles, dolphins, fish, and shorebirds – make up Africa’s first marine park.
The water’s purity and the park’s endless diversity of marine life ensure near-perfect diving and snorkeling. Windsurfing, water skiing, deep-sea fishing, and simply swimming among the vivid waterscape of fish inhabiting this reserve are all great things to do in Kenya’s first protected marine habitat.
The 6 square kilometer (2.3 square mile) park is bordered by the 213 square kilometer (82 square mile) reserve, which includes beaches, mangroves, mudflats, and a variety of coral reefs. There are approximately 600 different fish species and over a hundred different varieties of coral in the park.
You’ll see a rainbow of coral kinds when snorkeling, diving, swimming, or just visiting, including the flat, broad potato coral, the jagged branches of staghorn coral, and the appropriately titled organ pipe and boulder brain coral.
Look for triggerfish, parrotfish, butterflyfish, grouper, emperor, and other species while fluttering over these fragile coral formations. Sea anemones, crabs, lobsters, sea cucumbers, and octopuses are among the other creatures that live in this bustling underwater world.
Green, hawksbill, olive ridley, and loggerhead sea turtles are among the numerous species that call this park home. The turtles’ existence is ensured by the diverse environments here, which provide crucial breeding locations.
