Lake Nakuru National Park is a sight to see. There had been millions of deep pink flamingos in a burning sea! Their vibrant fuchsias popped against the deep blue alkaline waters of Lake Nakuru. Simply said… until a few years ago, it was the most spectacular display of birds on the planet.
The flamingo population has been declining due to natural forces, but the park itself remains gorgeous — one of Kenya’s best. The lake is surrounded by great granite escarpments, waterfalls, forested slopes, and euphorbia trees.
Other birds such as pelicans, cormorants, kingfishers, ostriches, storks, herons, and eagles join the small flock of flamingos. The atmosphere is colorful, bustling, and abundant.
But that’s just the beginning of what this unique park has to offer, since animal watching is simple and convenient.
Lake Nakuru is noted for being home to a number of threatened yet beautiful species. Along the lakefront, you’re likely to witness the rare Rothschild’s Giraffe and white rhino.
The park is also home to one of Kenya’s greatest black rhino herds.
Observing the park’s zebra, hippo, olive baboon, vervet and colobus monkeys, waterbuck, and hyena is another component of active wildlife viewing here. Lion, cheetah, leopard, and buffalo are some of the other large safari animals to keep an eye out for.
Because the park is enclosed to protect rhinos and giraffes, elephants are the only huge mammals that cannot be found here.
You’ll almost certainly stumble across herds of impala and waterbuck as you walk through the park’s lush acacia bush. Large pythons may also be seen hanging from trees in the woods. This is the famed African rock python, which can devour whole animals.
Those who have visited Lake Nakuru may witness to the park’s natural splendor, which includes hills, meadows, and woods. There are various easily accessible vantage spots from which to enjoy breathtaking views of the countryside, particularly the lake with its undulating pink bird population.
Despite the park’s small size, a trip to Lake Nakuru will provide a rich and colorful safari experience.
The park is small, measuring just 188 square kilometers (162 square miles), yet this only contributes to its accessibility and ease of game watching. The inner roads are well-kept and simple to navigate.
170 kilometers (105 meters) northwest of Nairobi sits Lake Nakuru. It’s close enough to visit for a day trip or a longer stay.
Climate: At 1,756 meters (5757 feet), the park is higher than others, which has a cooling effect. Despite being proximity to the equator, it seldom becomes hot. It also doesn’t become too hot, too cold, or too dry. In general, the climate in this area is pleasant.
However, there are sporadic late-afternoon rains, which are more enjoyable than a nuisance.
When is the best time to visit: The park is open all year. The wet season in many parks might put a stop to game watching, but this isn’t always the case at Lake Nakuru. The roads are good, and the animals will not scatter because the park is gated.
The dry season, which runs from July to December, is still the most popular period for viewing.
Lake Nakuru Park is open from 6:00 a.m. to 18:00 p.m. on a daily basis. Note that walking is not permitted, and hiking is only permitted in authorized locations with a KWS ranger.
Getting there: By car — Natural World Kenya Safaris offers tours from the coast and Nairobi. The Nairobi-Nakuru Highway will take you from Nairobi. The Rift Valley is visible from the road, and the vistas are spectacular.
Fly-in safaris are available at the park’s Naishi airstrip.
