Aberdare National Park is a hiking, fishing, and wildlife paradise with thick rainforest, stunning waterfalls, cold mountain breezes, and untamed moorlands. The lush greens of the lichen and mossy forests contrast sharply with the sandy yellows and browns found in most other parks.
And the mild temperature, lingering mists, and frigid lakes and streams are a far cry from the sun-drenched highlands and savannahs of the more well-known reserves.
Aberdare National Park is a park in Kenya.
The park’s 300-meter-high waterfalls, steep topography, misty tropical woods, and extensive hiking trails are as well-known as its abundance of species. If you go on a mountain trek, you’ll pass through rainforests, bamboo groves, and high alpine flora.
Buffalo, antelope, baboon, monkey, and elephant may be seen emerging from the deep jungle along your trip.
Over 2,000 elephants dwell in the park, as well as other extremely uncommon animals like the bongo, a huge antelope that lives in the bamboo forest. The extremely uncommon African golden cat can also be found here.
Aberdare is home to Kenya’s second biggest black rhino herd. Sightings of spotted hyenas, bush pigs, waterbuck, jackal, eland, and the elusive black leopard are common. The lion can also be found here, but it is rarely seen.
The park’s cold, foggy climate appears to attract a diverse range of birds, with over 290 species in total, including the endangered Aberdare cisticola. Raptors such as buzzards, hawks, and the African crown eagle may be seen in these cold glades.
Butterflies are particularly abundant in the park’s two principal ecosystems, the woods and the moorlands.
Aberdare Park has two distinct eco-systems. The Salient is a rainforest and hilly region with several high waterfalls. The mountains here are between 2,000 m (6,600 ft) and 4,000 m in height (13,000 ft).
The Kinangop Plateau is a windswept region of rocky moors. Hills, bogs, and icy, crystal alpine streams may all be found here. The moors’ mists give them a somber, aged beauty.
Aberdare’s lodgings are as unique as the park itself. They’re both close to popular watering areas and provide fantastic vantage points for watching the locals as they come to drink.
Treetops Lodge is a luxurious retreat in the woods.
It’s a treehouse, as the name says, where you may stay and watch the animals. When Princess Elizabeth stayed here after her father’s death and discovered that she had become Queen of England, the lodge became well-known across the world.
The lodge was built in the shape of Noah’s ark, as its name suggests. It offers breathtaking views of the park’s animals as they visit nearby watering holes and a salt lick.
Aberdare is a 767-square-kilometer park that is neither the largest nor the smallest in the country (296 sq. mi). It is classified as a park at a high elevation.
In Kenya’s central highlands, the park lies 150 kilometers (93 miles) east of Nairobi and 87 kilometers (54 miles) east of Naivasha. It’s part of the Aberdare Range, a group of volcanic mountains that make up the Rift Valley’s eastern rim.
The reserve is open everyday from 6:00 a.m. to 18:00 p.m. all year, although the best months to visit are January and February, as well as June through September. The roads are inaccessible during the rainy season, which runs from March through May.
