Ol Pejeta Conservancy

Ol Pejeta, once a cattle ranch, is now a private reserve dedicated to conserving and safeguarding animals, in an ironic twist of destiny.

Among these animals is East Africa’s biggest population of black rhinos (111). Here, too, reside the only two living northern white rhinos… the world’s last.

About Ol Pejeta

The Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary is also located here, and it is the only area in Kenya where you may observe the antics of these colorful and clever primates. This sanctuary, which was founded as a collaboration between the conservancy, the Kenya Wildlife Service, and the Jane Goodall Institute, saves orphaned and abandoned chimps from all around Africa.

Ol Pejeta is a 3-hour drive from Nairobi and is home to all of Kenya’s “Big Five” species, including one of the greatest predator populations of big cats.

On your game drives, there’s a strong possibility you’ll spot lions, since the six prides here have a total population of 72 of the big cats.

There are about 30 cheetahs and 20 phantom-like leopards in the reserve. This is also one of the few places in the world where you may see African wild dogs in packs. There was also a litter here a few years ago, indicating that the population is still growing.

Ol Pejeta is a conservancy that protects endangered animals such oryx, hartebeest, Grevy’s zebra, and bat-eared fox.

You’re likely to see giraffe, monkey, baboon, hippo, impala, gazelle, zebra, jackal, and hyena, as you would in most Kenya parks. There’s also a lot of birds here.

The conservancy covers 360 square kilometers (139 square miles) and is 207 kilometers (128 miles) from Nairobi.

Ol Pejeta uses a creative design to provide the animals freedom of movement while still protecting the rhinos. The park’s wildlife may walk in and out of the reserve by stepping over knee-high poles in special passageways. Except for rhinos, who are prevented from going into regions where they may be slaughtered for their horns, none of the animals are harmed.

Habitats

The park’s five ecosystems provide a diverse range of land and plants, allowing a wide range of animals to thrive. On your game drives, search for the following creatures that call these locations home:

Accommodations

The conservancy has nine different lodging options, ranging from river camping to the most opulent resorts. Some of the tented sites are located near watering holes, ensuring ample opportunities for day and night wildlife viewing.

Location:

In central Kenya, between the foothills of the Aberdares and the snow-capped Mt. Kenya.

Climate:

Temperatures are stable due to its proximity to the equator. Temperatures will be about 24°C during the day (75oF).

When is the best time to visit:

During the dry months of June through September and December through February, it is simpler to follow wildlife. During the rainy season, from October to May, the park is noticeably more lush.
