Meru National Park

Meru National Park has 13 rivers, a lot of rain, lush jungle, beautiful swamps, and infinite green rolling hills. In a nutshell, this park is both wild and lovely.

Meru is an underestimated park with few tourists, so there’s plenty of room here. That means it’s not crowded, unspoiled, and you’ll probably have a lot of it to yourself.

You, the lion, elephant, buffalo, cheetah, black and white rhino, zebra, crocodiles, and hippos, to be precise.

About Meru

There are about 400 kinds of birds in the river regions, including falcons, woodpeckers, starlings, kingfishers, and sunbirds.

The phoenix, on the other hand, should be Meru’s official bird. This wonderful park, like the phoenix, has risen from the ashes. Literally.

Meru National Park Information

Meru was formerly one of Kenya’s most popular parks, with 40,000 visitors a year enjoying the park’s woods, streams, and plentiful wildlife. However, poaching increased dramatically in the late 1970s and early 1980s, decimating the park’s big species. Meru’s rhinos and elephants were both murdered to the tune of 80% and 90%, respectively.

This once-popular reserve, which was formerly home to Joy Adamson of “Born Free” fame and where she released Elsa the lioness back into the wild, has been abandoned by both man and beast.

The Kenya Wildlife Service, with the assistance of the International Fund for Animal Welfare, came to the rescue in 2000. The park’s infrastructure was renovated, and possibly more crucially, a new anti-poaching ranger force was hired to preserve the animals.

Another development was the establishment of a rhino sanctuary that was impenetrable to poachers. There are currently 80 protected black and white rhinos in this 80-square-kilometer (30-square-mile) habitat.

This ‘park inside a park’ is constantly patrolled and is one of Kenya’s greatest spots to see this endangered animals.

Despite its breathtaking geography, abundant river life, and a diverse array of species that rivals other Kenya parks… and despite the best efforts of rangers and environmentalists, Meru has not regained its grandeur or popularity from its heyday.

However, this just adds to the park’s wildness, making it more fascinating for you.

Meru is 350 kilometers (220 miles) north of Mt. Kenya and 350 kilometers (220 miles) north of Nairobi.

Climate:

The abundant rain throughout the rainy season has resulted in lush grass and fertile marshes. The average daily temperature is 32 degrees Celsius/90 degrees Fahrenheit. In the park’s western parts, the strongest rainfall come in annual levels of roughly 762mm (30 in).

When is the best time to visit:

The park is open all year, although the greatest time to see animals is from June to September, when the weather is dry.

How to get there:

From Nairobi, you’ll be able to travel on all-weather roads. The park’s roads have been renovated, however they can degrade in the rain.

By air: Kina, Mulika has the primary airfield.
