Giga Destinations, Tours and Safaris
You’ve arrived in a vast expanse of meadows and savannah. You’ve arrived in the actual wildness of Tsavo East National Park, Kenya’s largest and oldest park.
The red-dust dirt here attracts large herds of elephants, who congregate around vital drinking holes to stay alive. The sight of these colossal beings splashing each other is a joy to behold and will be remembered for a long time.
The park’s scant vegetation makes it easier to view wildlife, and it’s not unusual to see the rare Tsavo lions, which lack the traditional manes.
Tsavo East is Kenya’s largest protected region, a place rich in biodiversity and home to Africa’s “Big Five” — black rhinoceros, Cape buffalo, elephants, leopards, and, of course, lions.
However, eland, gerenuk, impala, and Masai giraffe can be seen on game drives here. What about the birds? Over 500 species await your discovery, including the black kite, lovebird, and sacred ibis.
The terrain here, too, begs to be explored. The Yatta Plateau, the world’s longest lava flow at 300 kilometers, may be traversed.
The Galana River, which runs through the park, produces a lovely line of vegetation that cuts over the arid savannah, so it’s not all harsh plains. Hippos, crocodiles, and waterbuck are among the many animals found in this unpredictable reserve.
Tsavo East National Park is located in Tsavo East, Kenya.
The park has an area of 11,747 square kilometers. It reaches a height of 1,200 meters above sea level.
The park is located between Nairobi and Mombasa in southwest Kenya. It’s near to the Kenya Coast’s beaches and may easily be a one-day safari for those looking for a quick escape.
When to go: The park is open all year and is always open. Daily hours are 06:00 a.m. to 18:00 p.m. Note that walking or hiking is only permitted in approved locations and with the company of a Kenya Wildlife Service ranger.
By road – Giga Destinations Safaris offers tours from the coast and Nairobi.
Charter planes can land at any of the park’s several airstrips.
Take the Nairobi-Mombasa train line, which passes through the park.
Things to do and see in the area
The elephants, of course! Rolling about in the red-dust earth, spraying each other, and herding in places like:
Mudanda Rock is a 1.6-kilometer-long whale-shaped rock that towers over a natural dam. Hundreds of elephants flock to the park’s life-giving waters.
Aruba Dam is a man-made dam with a stunning scenic appeal and a large conservation area. Thousands of species make this an ideal spot for wildlife viewing.
Lugard’s Falls — the Galana River falls into a tiny rocky cleft in this strangely eroded natural feature. You may stand on both sides of the falls and watch it drop into the rapids and pools below, which are teeming with crocodiles waiting to attack.
Walking safaris — on a guided walking safari along the Galana River, get out of your safari vehicle and experience the country beneath your feet.
Whether you visit Tsavo East for a few hours or many days, there is much to see and do.
Birds, elephants, lions, leopards, and giraffes are among the animals that may be found in the park. This is Africa at its most remote, but most accessible, state. The largest park in Kenya awaits your arrival.
