Tsavo West National Park is extreme and spectacular in every way. The land’s curves and diversity, the desert’s vivid hues, the sky and springs, and the surprise of neighboring creatures emerging from the scrub.
Dark volcanic lava beds, surprising vistas, old baobab trees, and lush oasis fed by subterranean springs punctuate the park’s vast savannah picture.
Africa’s “big five” may be found here in the deep vegetation, hunting for prey and nutrition as they have for millions of years. This terrain is home to the legendary Tsavo lions and herds of red dust elephants. Tsavo is home to Kenya’s most populous elephant population.
Keep a watch out for giraffes feasting on the treetops, and don’t be shocked if you encounter buffalo, leopard, or rhino, particularly in the Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary. Approximately 80 of these endangered animals are housed here in a protected environment.
Of course, as you go around the park with your experienced guide, you’re bound to see some of the area’s lesser-known animals, such as the bushbaby, hartebeest, dik-dik, lesser kudo, gerenuk, and impala.
And there are a lot of monkeys! Yellow baboons and vervet monkeys frequent the park’s numerous acacia trees, and their antics are sure to amuse you.
Tsavo West is a never-ending display of surprises. The parched grassland gives way to Mzima Springs’ lush greenery. You may drive to amazing overlooks like Poacher’s Lookout in Chyulu Hills, where you’ll be treated to stunning landscapes and a distant glimpse of snow-capped Mt. Kilimanjaro.
What other park in Kenya provides such thrilling rock climbing opportunities? Climb Elephant Rock’s Kichwa Tembo, the Great Tsavo Chimney, or the Ivory Tower for spectacular views of the savannah below.
Tsavo West is unrivaled in terms of terrain diversity and spectacular African fauna.
Tsavo West is one of Kenya’s biggest parks, covering 9,065 square kilometers. The Nairobi-Mombasa motorway and train line divide it from its sister park, Tsavo East.
The park is located between Nairobi and Mombasa in southeast Kenya. It’s near to the Kenya Coast’s beaches and may easily be a one-day safari for those looking for a quick escape.
It is debatable. Choose the rainy season if you want greener (rather than browner) surroundings, want the best views of Kilimanjaro, and want to see the most birds (October to May). However, if you want to see more animals, the ideal time to go is during the dry months. As they make their way to the rivers and drinking holes, the animals are easier to identify.
